This should sound familiar: Exoticly dressed bishoujo and bishounen
fight magical battles that tear up Tokyo. And in fact, manga-ka Okazaki
Takeshi is known to have associations with CLAMP and Higawara Kazushi.
This 45-minute OAV, alas, is a bit too short for its story. As it starts, young Kagura suffers a trauma rivaling anything Ikari
Shinji ever faced, and his only light in this is his new girlfriend Asami.
But this is interruped by a war between Elementors, or elemental spirit
users. The would-be lovers are parted and Elementor powers in each
surface. Elementors (Seireitsukai), based on a 4-volume manga series, has an unfortunate cramped feel to it, that of something broader in scope, crowded into some workable order at the expense of explanations and character motivations. That being said, there are virtues to redeem it. The art has the beauty one should expect in such X-ish fare, and there is an artistry to the film's whole structure. Really, this isn't a bad way to spend an afternoon, so long as one isn't waiting for everything to make sense. If only everyone could be given more time, more room, and less flare. |
