Gekiganger III OAV

Thought I would write a new review for all you fans out there.I found out a few days ago that Doug had just recived the Gekiganger OVA on LD. Needless to say I was a little thrilled , for 2 reasons, 1 I'm a giant robot junkie, and 2 I'm a retro junkie, and I knew this OVA wouldn't disapoint....I was right.

To start off a little, some fans out there may not be familiar with Gekiganger 3, which I seriously doubt, but for their benifit I'll set the stage. Some may be familiar with the popular show Nadesico. This was another Ship and crew space story. Even though the premise was a little stale, the show had some refreshing originality, and likeable characters. This is the basis for Nadesico, but the makers hit a little gem while making the show. One of the main characters Daigougi Gai (even though an anime character himself), happens to be a anime otaku. Enter his favorite show...Gekiganger 3.. The show Gai is watching (Gekiganger 3) is the animators ode to older 70's "Big" robot shows like "Getta robo" and the show it most copies "Mazinger-Z". There is a little irony to it. Fans of the show Nadesico Quickly became fans of Gekiganger 3. It spawned a new trend, and Gekiganger 3 posters, calenders, toys, CDs, and cards, became popular items. They even redid the Gekiganger3 opening theme song using the voice talent of the very same man who sang the original opening theme for Mazinger-Z. It in fact led to the creation of the Gekiganger OVA, not a suprise.

Being a fan of both Nadesico and Geki, I found the new OVA extremely enjoyable, but I'm sure It was not what a lot of people expected it to be. It starts off with Akito, Yurika, and Ruri, at a very futuristic movie theater. They make small talk while thumbing through the programs for the featured Gekiganger3 OVA, waiting for it to start. Once the movie begins for them, so it does for us also. The 1st 15 min. of the OVA are recaped eps. that we saw in the Nadesico series. Hmm where have we seen that trick before...EVA. The rest of the show features that real Gainy animation, and cool stock footage explosions, you know all the good things you would expect from a 70s robot show, except it was recently made. They really know their Retro trivia and it shows.

I won't spoil you with details about the story in the OVA, but it was, to say the least a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it, and so much so that I placed my order for the LD last night as well....I can't be without it. And as if that wasn't enough the LD comes with some cool goodies; a sheet of uncut Gekiganger post cards , and a sheet of awesome Geki stickers....got to have those. well because of the genre I had to give it 5 stars. and highly recomend it for Nadesico fans if nothing more.
